A huge dam built for a hydro power-plant holds the 761 million cubic metres of water in its place.
With a length of 10km and more than 3km wide in some parts, the lake covered most of the old village of Les Salles-sur-Verdon which now lays 40m under water. When the dam was built the village was relocated on higher ground but only a few structures were preserved.
